QANTAS will increase capacity on several overseas routes after chief executive Alan Joyce told a Melbourne lunch the airline was making good progress with the turnaround of its ailing international operations.
Mr Joyce told American Chamber of Commerce that the carrier was able to make the improvements to its global network after finding more efficient ways to maintain aircraft and avoid having them idle on the ground.
This included boosting the unitisation of Airbus A330s that had been spending the weekend on the ground in Perth.
The increases include a 5 per cent rise in weekly capacity between Sydney and Hong Kong, with the addition of a fifth Airbus A380 superjumbo flight, and a 15 per cent increase in weekly Brisbane-Los Angeles capacity, with a move to daily Boeing 747 flights.
